lIFE dRAWING: Investigating fundamentals to witnessing live action & presenting a dialogue

The course caters for people of all abilities in our light and airy Art Studio, and seeks to provide a platform for experimentation within life drawing, stimulating imagination and enhancing skills. The goal is to build confidence and provide the tools to develop observation and drawing ability.

During the ten weeks you will explore techniques to tackle form, shape, line, proportions and the use of tone within the drawing process; perceiving, creating and presenting a drawn dialogue. The course will include the chance to experiment with black and white materials, as well as trialling the use of colour in one and half hour long sessions.

Media will include drawing (pencils, graphite, charcoal, and ink) and a plethora of traditional and new mark-making techniques; moderately referring to further painting, printing and collage. All courses will involve both group and individual tuition from an experienced tutor, and use male and female life models (unclothed).

This course will also explore contemporary drawing techniques on display in The Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition at The Edge, with week two providing an opportunity for in-depth observation and drawing activities from within the touring display.

Tutor: Alex Roberts works between Berlin and the UK. She is a British artist who works with paint and translucence; addressing paintings’ surface and spatial depth. Testing the sliding scale of figuration and abstraction, her focus is how we perceive identity and change – encounters. Roberts completed her MAFA at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL, 2015. In 2016, Roberts joined The Transart Institute as an Artist Advisor, along with helping establish an on-going drawing programme about the figure, besides linking platforms of exchange at Drawing Projects UK.
