Damon Protopapa

I love music that pushes the boundaries of what is expected

Drummer Damon Protopapa is studying MEng (Hons) Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath and has been selected as an Arts Scholar for 2018-19. Damon shares his love for the arts, how he came to play the drums and what he’s working on ahead of Platform, the annual scholarship showcase.

What is your background in your chosen art form?

I first started playing classical guitar but wasn’t really passionate about it. When I was younger, my group of friends who are all musicians thought it might be fun to play music together. Since none of us knew how to play the drums, I volunteered and instantly fell in love with the instrument. I have recently taken up percussion and am trying to improve my classical percussion and sight reading skills.

What are you working on ahead of Platform?

At the moment our group has recently decided on what pieces we are going to perform. I have spent time listening to the music and trying to come up with an interesting part for the drum kit.

If you are collaborating with other students tell us a bit about the process and how it’s going?

I am collaborating in a group with Demetris, Maria, Roya, and Dominic. It is going very well, we are all interested in the same styles and have quickly decided on what we want to perform.

What/Who inspires, influences or drives you?

I love music that pushes the boundaries of what is expected, either from a music theory standpoint or simply through their technical prowess. Benny Greb, Matt Garstka, Dave Weckl are just a few of many influential drummers that I look up to. I also admire other types of musicians, like Chick Corea, John Coltrane.

Do you have any other creative pursuits?

I love all forms of art. At the moment I am trying to learn how to draw traditionally, and I am practising art fundamentals. I would also like to learn composition and am learning how to play the piano to facilitate this process.

We’d like to thank Nick Berry for the generous support for this Arts Scholarship.
