Visions of Science 2018 Art Bursaries Announced
Eight artists have been selected to work in collaboration with researchers from University of Bath’s Faculty of Science to create new works this summer.
The UK artists will be awarded £1000 bursaries to realise projects depicting, reflecting on or utilising modern day scientific phenomena as studied at the University. Collaborations include researchers from the department of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and the Milner Centre for Evolution.
The projects have been selected by University of Bath’s Jamie Eastman, Director of Arts and Professor Nick Brook, Dean of Science. Nick Brook commented
It was great to see such a competitive field for these bursaries aligned with the research agenda at the University. I’m really excited about the outcome of these projects and looking forward to seeing them at the exhibition later in the year.
Exploring a wide range of research, the collaborations vary from a performance artist fascinated by black holes, a painter focusing on evolution, to a comic book artist concerned with making research into Plasmonic Nano-Structures more accessible.
The works created will be revealed in the Visions of Science exhibition, alongside the Andrew Brownsword Gallery’s inaugural Art Prize from 15 Sep – 13 Oct 2018. The exhibition presenting connections between art and science, both fuelled by our curiosity as humans to understand the world and share our perspectives.
The Visions of Science Art Prize is still open for submissions until Sun 15 Jul with prizes up to £4000. The Prize will be judged by Alan Cotton (artist and Honorary Professor of Arts, University of Bath) Kate Bryan (art historian, curator and broadcaster) Dr Chris Stephens (Director of the Holburne Museum, Bath) and Professor Nick Brook (Dean of Science, University of Bath).
