Smithson Snapshots: architectural photography from the Smithson family collection
Specially selected from the Smithson Family Collection, these photographs taken by Alison and Peter Smithson over a 30 year period demonstrate how the historic city of Bath inspired England’s influential post-war architects and informed their modern designs here at the University.
Although the Smithson’s Brutalist style is quite unlike the Palladian architecture of Bath, they took enormous inspiration from the built heritage of Bath, sharing design aspirations for cohesion, organisation and enjoyment in habitation.
This exhibition presents images taken for Bath: Walks within the Walls first published by Peter Smithson in 1969, alongside images of the buildings designed for the University of Bath, the Smithsons’ last major architectural project in England.
Delivered by The Edge, University of Bath, in association with Past, Present, Future Alison and Peter Smithson in Bath, Museum of Bath Architecture (24 June – 26 Nov 2017). In partnership with Curator Dr Amy Frost, Bath Preservation Trust.
