There is something magic about your hands in clay… your troubles fade awayArtist Emma Hart on clay
Join artist Claire Loder for a fun and creative morning workshop exploring various ways of working with the clay surface, using Emma Hart’s work as a starting point.
Taking our cue from Hart’s show Banger, we’ll be working with imagery across a tiled/tessellated surface. Looking at how a range of clays can be used in combination, exploring the qualities of unfired clay and how to create texture and expression. You’ll have the chance to take your creations home on the day, or send them off to be fired in a kiln (extra fee).
Claire Loder is an artist and educator based in Bath. Clay and drawing are central to her practice – her focus is predominately figurative. Originally trained in Illustration and Graphic Design at Bath Spa University she made the switch to 3D in 2004 with a Ceramics MA in Cardiff. Following her MA she received the Crafts Council’s Next Move Award. Her book ‘The New Ceramics – Sculpting and Handbuilding’ was published by Bloomsbury in 2013. She is a lecturer at Bath Spa University.
Loder’s sculptures are a combination of intuitive construction, tactility and off-kilter form. These stony faces are lighter than they appear, the hollow interiors a repository for thoughts, feelings and emotions of subject and viewer. Current fascinations include the covered and disrupted face and the possibilities this offers for disquiet, plus an interest in the idea of human/nature – our connection, rejection and immersion in the natural world. Ideas and themes come from all over the place – most often literature, language, feminism and the natural world. The work is often irreverent but also melancholy and contemplation.
