Would you delete your online legacy at the moment of your death?

It’s the moment of your death.

There’s a magic button.

Do you delete your entire online legacy?

Or do you keep it – and leave the choice for someone else?

USER NOT FOUND is about our digital identities after we die. This new play by celebrated site-specific company Dante or Die and pioneering writer Chris Goode is performed in The Edge Arts Cafe. Through smartphones and headphones you become a fly-on-the-wall of one man faced with keeping or deleting. A story of contemporary grief unfolds through this intimate, funny performance that gently interrogates our need for connection.

Dr. John Troyer, Director of The Centre for Death and Society here at The University of Bath, began collaborating with Dante or Die on User Not Found in 2016. He is an internationally recognised expert on how humans use different technology interfaces to understand death and dying. Initial conversations explored how different kinds of technology (photographs, video recordings, social media posts, etc.) create an archive before a person dies. The project then shifted and began to explore how a live performance could capture the experience of using a device, such as a smartphone, to remember a dead person through texts and images.

User Not Found is the realisation of that collaborative research and a really thoughtful way to approach how grief and bereavement interact with modern communication technologies.

Every performance of User Not Found is captioned: please inform a member of Front of House staff on entry to the performance space that you would like to use the captioning system. For more information, please contact the Box Office
